This is part two of the story of a journey i did in 1981. Part one is here…

I haven’t got a clear memory of getting back to Spain from Morocco. As far as i remember, i’d spent a night in Algeciras before catching the boat to Tangier, but i don’t think we stayed there when we got back. We probably just got on a train and went somewhere else, rather than hanging around in Algeciras. One of the problems with InterRail cards was that it was so much easier to just hop on a train and spend the night on the move than it was to find a hotel room somewhere!

After writing briefly, the other day, about the time i sort of “met” Johnny Rotten, i started thinking about writing stories of some of the things i did years ago. There’s not much to blog about that’s particularly exciting in my life at the moment, and now seems as good a time as any to write down some of that stuff.

On at least a couple of occasions when i was in my early 20s, i spent a month travelling around Europe on an InterRail card. I can’t remember how much they cost, but they were reasonably cheap and with one of them you could travel by train anywhere in western Europe and Morocco for a month. Anyway, Phil and Brenton were going to Southend on Phil’s motorbike so Brenton could buy a bike there himself. I guess a motorbike’s the smart way to get around London these days, with the prices of petrol and public transport the way they are. And, as Southend’s only about twenty miles from here, i thought i’d pop over there and meet up with them. … Read more »

I did intend to write another blog the day after i wrote the last one, but i never got round to it. Or, rather, i didn’t get round to it till now. Here it is…

I went to London on Thursday last week, and met up with Sanjar and Sonia – a couple of friends from Kabul. Sanjar’s Afghan and Sonia’s Russian and they got married in Kabul last year. They’ve been living in Glasgow since late last year as Sanjar got a scholarship to study there. I hadn’t seen them since i left Kabul – which is over a year ago now. It was great to be able catch up with them again. … Read more »

Well, after a bit of thought, i decided not to go back and work in Kabul. There were various reasons, but mainly i don’t think it’s the right thing for me to do at this time. I was tempted in a way, as i did (mostly) enjoy the job i was doing there – and it’s always nice when your employer flies you across the world and pays for hotels on the way! … Read more »
