European Union

There’s been a bit of a mini crisis in Europe this week, as a referendum in Ireland rejected a new treaty between the EU member countries.

Naturally – in the way of all things that have ever been done by bureaucrats – the treaty that created the EU in the first place was a bit of a bodge-up and it doesn’t allow the European Union to progress from the point it’s at at the moment. Among other things, the current treaty limits the number of member countries to 27 – which has already been reached. That means countries like Croatia, which is hoping to become a member by 2011, wouldn’t be able to join. … Read more »

Reverse Robin Hood

Thinking about what the UK government are doing at the moment, i can’t help paraphrasing the ancient Hollies song King Midas In Reverse:

He’s Robin Hood in reverse
He’s Robin Hood with a curse

Where the real Robin Hood took from the rich and gave to the poor, British prime minister, Gordon Brown, is taking from the poor to give to the rich. … Read more »

Good Riddance to John Howard!

Well, it’s hard to believe, but finally the destructive force of the Howard government has come to an end!

And it’s poetic justice that, as well as being Australia’s second longest serving prime minister, Howard’s also the second one to lose his seat while still in power. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person! Now he can crawl back under whatever rock it was that he came out from in the first place.

Voting In The Australian Federal Election

I voted today – for the first time ever in Australia. I’ve only been here 22 years, so i guess that’s reasonable!

I voted in England once, too. It was the first election after i turned 18 and i wanted to see what all the fuss was about. But it wasn’t very exciting, so i never did it again!

Anyway, i’m enrolled in a marginal electorate and it’s just possible my vote could actually count. I hope it does, because i’m sick of watching that bastard Howard on his rampage of cultural destruction in this country. Since this lot have been in power, they’ve done a very good job of destroying all the good things about Australian culture. What they’ve left in its place is an ugly, selfish, and greedy imitation of the US. … Read more »

Johnny the Conqueror’s Domesday Book

Arnhem Land seems more like Afghanistan every day! We get dust storms here – just like Kabul. In Kabul, the locals herd sheep through the streets – here, they herd dogs (which looks pretty similar from a distance!). And the other day, i found myself  in a meeting with a couple of soldiers. Just like the old days! Strangely, the soldier i was dealing with left Afghanistan about the same time as i did… … Read more »
