Sunny

The newspaper the other day reckoned we were well on the way to this being the sunniest February on record. That wouldn’t surprise me at all, because we’ve had very uncharacteristic weather here this month.

I haven’t posted a blog for a while – because i haven’t been doing anything worth blogging about really. It’s just been more of the same – walking the seawalls, taking photos, and fruitlessly searching for a job!

I’m quite surprised how hard it is to find a job at the moment. Normally i’m really lucky with that sort of thing. But my luck seems to have run out – and i really don’t know what to do about it! I’ve applied for four jobs so far – and barely even had any acknowledgement, let alone an interview.

I wasn’t surprised not to get an interview for one of them, but the other two did surprise me. The fourth one’s just about still pending – so it’s still possible.

The main problem is that, in this country, they all seem to want a degree before they’ll even hire you to push a wheelbarrow. So you’d think that everything would be really well run, wouldn’t you? But everywhere i look i see clear evidence of appallingly bad management. And no doubt the people responsible have got degrees coming out of their ears! I think that may be the only thing most managers in this country have got between their ears though!

Anyway, i’ve been doing plenty of walking – and i reckon i’ve probably just about caught up with the backlog from all those months that i couldn’t walk much, in Kabul and Maningrida. So far this week i’ve walked close to 50 miles (80km)!

As i said, it’s been a while since i did a blog post – but my blog at the moment really consists of photos posted to my flickr pages.

Here’s one from yesterday:

Seawall Gate With Junk

A gate across the seawall on the edge of the North Sea. It’s miles from anywhere, but it looks like someone’s decorated it with loads of bits of junk they’ve found washed up on the beach!

I ended up at this spot twice this week – on Sunday i walked there from Bradwell and yesterday i walked there from Burnham. I walked for about two hours (7 or 8 miles) from each place, to get there, so it’s about half way between the two.

On both occasions i was wearing shorts, so i took my boots off and had a bit of a paddle in the North Sea – which seems amazingly warm for the time of year! That’s not to say it’s exactly “warm” though – it’s just not nearly as cold as i would have expected. I’m sure i’ve tried to paddle in the North Sea in the middle of summer and it’s been colder than it is now. If the sun had been out constantly (rather than in and out of the clouds) and there hadn’t been any wind, i would probably have had a quick dip yesterday!
