Prohibition End
The title of this post reminds me of some weirdarse pothead i used to know in far north Queensland many years ago. He changed his name by deed poll to “Prohibition End” – so when he went to court the usher would have to call out “End, Prohibition”. I think this was the same fruitloop who later changed his name again to “Beautiful All” – so the usher would have to call “All, Beautiful”! And i won’t mention the group of Brisbane weirdos who all changed their surnames to “Freemarijuana”!
Anyway, this blog post’s got nothing to do with any of them – and even less to do with marijuana, i’m pleased to say…
Prohibition ended here today – before it had even begun really. I don’t know if it’s a blanket end, across all Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory, or if they’ve only ended it in some. But what i do know is the alcohol ban in Maningrida has been postponed till September.
Why September? Well, i can only assume John Howard expects to have held the election by then and the whole thing can quietly fade away into nothing again. Aboriginal people will once more cease to exist for the federal government and it’ll be back to business as usual and looking after their mates.
But why has it been postponed? Well, on this one, i can only guess that the brewery bosses pointed out to Howard how much money they had been going to donate to the Liberal party’s re-election fund. Of course they probably wouldn’t be able to afford to donate it now, because of the effect on their profits of an alcohol ban in the Territory.
I’m surprised he didn’t ask their permission before he announced it!
