A Weird Year (And A Bit)

I feel like i’m beginning to emerge from what must have been one of the weirder periods of my life…

On the 9th of July last year, i was working four days a week as a tenant advocate (representing tenants in the tenancy tribunal) at the Northern Rivers Community Legal Centre. On Fridays, i was doing a certificate 3 course in arboriculture (tree surgery etc) at the nearby TAFE college.

My plan was to complete the course and end up with the certificate 3 at the end of the year, and then, hopefully, to find a decent job working with trees – maybe in Darwin. I mostly enjoyed the tenants advocate work – although the novelty was beginning to wear off, and i wasn’t keen on being stuck in an office all the time. And once the TAFE course was finished, i didn’t want to be working part time. So it would have been a good time for a career change. … Read more »

Looking For Flights

It’s not long now till i’m due to leave Maningrida. There’s only about ten days to go now. After that, i’m going to Brisbane and northern New South Wales for a couple of weeks and then i’m off to England. I’m pretty sure i’m going to head back to Darwin from Brisbane and fly overseas from there.

I’ve thought about getting a flight from Brisbane – or even the Gold Coast, as Air Asia is now doing cheap flights from the Gold Coast to Kuala Lumpur. But that would mean i’d have to take everything i want to take to England down south with me. All my stuff will be stored in Darwin and it would be much more convenient to travel light down south and then come back up this way to pick up what i need for England – like cold weather gear, for a start! … Read more »

Raining In Darwin

It looks like the wet season’s started early here this year. I was in Darwin at the weekend and it poured down there on Saturday night. When i got back to Maningrida on Sunday afternoon, i could see it had rained here too. And when i got home, it was obvious there’d been a big wind storm of some sort, too – because there was loads of dust all over my lounge room. It looked like i’d been away for months!

Before i went, i thought about closing the louvres, but i didn’t in the end, because i didn’t think there was a need to. The awnings outside the windows are so wide, it would be almost impossible for rain to get in. I didn’t think about dust though… Apparently there was a massive dust storm, with wind blowing at the front of the house, across the park over the road. Then it poured down with rain. … Read more »

A Year Of Blogging

On Saturday it’ll be a year since i signed up to Myspace. I did it because my sister, Lucy, hassled me to. Before that, i’d looked at it once or twice and it didn’t look very interesting – i found out afterwards that there was something wrong with the way my web browser displayed it, and once i’d sorted that out it looked much better! Of course, there’s been plenty of myspace weirdnesses like that in the last year.

When i signed up i was living in Kabul, Afghanistan, and it was a good way to keep in touch with my family in England and friends in Australia. Eventually, i found various old friends on it and it got better and better for keeping in touch with all sorts of people from all round the world. … Read more »

Reprieve

My next door neighbour was going to be driving to Darwin in his ute tomorrow arvo, and he was going to take some of my stuff for me. So, this week, i’ve been frantically procrastinating – and dismally failing to pack very much.

But he told me today he’s not going till next weekend now, so i can relax again. Phew! :-)

Now i can put off the procrastination till next week! … Read more »
